What Is The Purpose Of Life?
A Question Of Meaning
As we enter the last week of June, we know that summer is upon us. I write these devotions several weeks in advance, so it is impossible to know the temperature for today, but it is a relatively safe assumption that it is hot today or will be hot very soon. On a hot summer day, it is always refreshing to have a cold drink of water after coming inside. That water gives you new life after the sun tries to murder you.
But we know that drinking water must be a regular part of your life. To be healthy, you’ve got to drink water before, during, and after exerting yourself. There never comes a point in your life that you can say, “I’ve drunk enough water and never need to drink water again!”
When Jesus shares with the Woman at the Well, he entices her by saying, “yes, this water is great, but the water I can give is even better.” Jesus tells her that if you want meaning and purpose in life, you need to drink the water that I provide. And this is exactly what Jesus tells us too.
If you want meaning and purpose in life, you will not find it outside of Jesus. Every other thing in which you try to find meaning and purpose will leave you thirsty again. Finding your purpose in Jesus will never leave you thirsty. It will leave you fulfilled in life and give your life ultimate meaning.
