Cain and Abel

Life is not over when Adam and Eve leave the garden; in fact, life on earth is just beginning. Cain and Abel are born. Cain is the older of the two brothers, but the text makes it seem like they are close in age. We don’t know for sure. Verse 2 also gives a key plot point that will be important tomorrow. Abel is a shepherd, and Cain is a farmer. The offering that they will give to God from their work will lead to the tragedy of this story.

What we will see in the story of Cain and Abel is that when we let pride enter our worship of God, our relationships with God and people suffer. This happens more often than we hope. All too often, we allow our preferences in a worship service to overshadow the one we are worshipping. Pride enters Cain’s heart and results in a tragic scene, which we will read about tomorrow. Do not allow pride to overcome your worship of God. Give to God with a humble heart.
