The First Sin
Why accept responsibility when there is someone else to blame? It’s not my fault! That’s what Adam and Eve both do when confronted by God about eating the fruit. Adam even adds a little bit of blame to God by reminding him that God gave him this woman. If you can blame someone else, great. But if you can blame God for your mistake, well, that’s just the cherry on top of the sundae!
Adam and Eve’s response is only funny because it is how we all act when we get caught in a sin. Humans have been the same since the very beginning. But you and I have a chance to be different. What a breath of fresh air it would be if we could take responsibility for our actions. This is what God wants us to do. He desires us to confess our sins to him and to one another. Not so that we can feel guilty, but because God wants us to be forgiven. He wants us to be freed from the shackles of sin. Forgiveness awaits those who can admit they are sinners. Don’t blame others for your sin; accept responsibility, but also accept the forgiveness that God desires you to have.
