The First Sin
There is so much to say about these 8 verses. We could talk about the punishments for the serpent, man, and woman. Did the serpent have legs before this (Gen. 3:14)? The man was always supposed to work (Gen. 2:15), but now the work will be difficult and the ground hard. I hear every one of you farmers and ranchers saying, “Thanks a lot, Adam!” The woman was cursed with painful childbirth. Now, I hear every woman reading this saying, “Thanks a lot, Eve!”
None of those punishments, though, is the greatest verse of this passage. Verse 21 gives us a look at God’s character and reminds us how much God loves humanity. After Adam and Eve mess up and do the one thing God told them not to, God makes clothes for them. Adam and Eve had tried to cover themselves, but God saw those rags and had compassion on them (my words). Even though they messed up, God still took care of them. I am thankful for a God who takes care of us even when we mess up. Pray a prayer of thanksgiving to God right now for giving you the care you don’t deserve. And think about how you can show that type of love to others in your life. Who do you need to forgive? Who has wronged you and needs a second chance? God takes care of us even when we’ve messed up. Follow his example in your other relationships as well.
