The Tower Of Babel

Our intentions matter. Consider our actions concerning the American flag. It is seen as grievous disrespect to burn the American flag. Yet, on the other hand, the flag code explains that the appropriate way of disposing of an American flag no longer in use is by burning it. The same rule applies to Bibles. It is disrespectful to burn Bibles. And yet, the appropriate way of disposing of tattered copies of the Bible is burning them. What is in our hearts matters as much as what our hands do.

Our intentions matter. The problem in the story of the Tower of Babel is not the city nor the tower, but the reason for building the tower. The intention of the people in our verses today is to make a name for themselves. The intention is to reach up to heaven and be like gods themselves. This was their goal. And it was that goal which made building the tower wrong.

Our reason for our actions is just as, if not more, important than what we do. Working hard to support your family and have money to give to others is noble. Working hard so that you can build your empire and be selfish with your money is wrong. Serving others because they need help is good. Serving others so you can get a pat on the back is inappropriate. Our intentions matter.
