Many people enjoy restoring old things and making them look new. If you just search restoration shows on your TV, you’ll find a full catalog of programs that focus on this hobby. Whether it is a car, a piece of furniture, or a house, it is exciting to give something old new life.
Our God finds joy in restoring old things as well. As Jeremiah is prophesying doom and gloom for the people of Israel, Jeremiah also proclaims that God will restore the land as it was at first. The Israelites will return after exile because the Lord is good and merciful. To continue the metaphor of a piece of furniture, God created Israel, and it was good and in working order. Over the years, Israel fell into disrepair and did not keep itself up to the standard that God set for it. But God, being the great restorer that he is, will take Israel in its current state and refurbish Israel back to its former glory.
And this is what God can do for you and me when we cry out to him for help. God created us in good and working order, but sin pulls us away from God. It wears us out and makes us spiritually dilapidated. But if we cry out to the Lord, he will come to sand out our rough patches, give us a fresh coat of paint, and we will return to our original sinless state with a new life that God wants us to have. Thank you, God, for being the great restorer.
