Depending on your translation of the Bible, Jonah declares in verse 9 that he fears or worships the Lord. English translations being divided on how to translate that word in verse 9 gives us a good indication of what worship should be. Worship is not a song that we sing, but it is a devotion, respect, and service that we give to God.

But for Jonah to say this in verse 9 is hilarious. Jonah is not exactly showing respect and reverence to God. God told him to go somewhere, and Jonah went in the opposite direction. His statement in verse 9 seems to be describing who he thinks he is because of his family history, and less about who he actually is as a worshipper of God.

Does Jonah believe what he is saying? Does he think he fears/worships God? We could ask the same question about ourselves as well. We say we worship and fear the Lord, but do we actually? How often do we receive a command from God and ignore it? We all have a command from God in our lives. We are supposed to be going and making disciples. Are you? If not, you’re doing the same thing Jonah did: saying that you fear/worship the Lord but not following his commands. And saying one thing but doing another is the definition of a hypocrite. Don’t just say you fear/worship God; live like it.
