Where’s the rest of the story?!? Verse 11 does not seem like the conclusion to a story. I’ve often wondered what happened to Jonah after this story. I assume he goes back to Israel. What happens then? Did God ask him to do more work? Was Jonah a sourpuss the rest of his life? All questions I won’t know the answer to on this side of heaven.
Nevertheless, verse 11 is a very peculiar ending to the story. We are left with a question regarding whether God should care about the human population of Nineveh and the animals as well. What’s going on there? Well, that’s a question to be answered during the sermon on Sunday morning.
As we consider the entire story of Jonah, we realize that his story is not much different than ours. In our relationship with God, we end up either obeying or running away. When we run away, God comes to find us and brings us back. In our relationship with God, sometimes we get it right; other times we get it wrong, but always God is with us. We can never run out of the presence of God, and for that, we can all be thankful.
