I gave away the story of Jonah 3 yesterday, toward the end of the devotion. Jonah goes to Nineveh and proclaims the destruction of Nineveh. And unlike most of the stories in the Prophets, the Ninevites believed Jonah and repented. The king, as well, listened to Jonah and repented, mourned, and fasted. It wasn’t just that they believed Jonah, but verse 5 says they believed in God after Jonah’s words. When Jonah was willing to go and do the work, God was able to do a work in the people’s hearts, and they changed for the better.

This is the power of God, and this is what God can do when we obey his commands to be his workers on the earth. When we go where God leads, instead of running the other way, God can do incredible work. As a reminder of what Ephesians 3:20 says, God can do far more than we ask or imagine, and he can do that work within us. If God is calling you to go and do, all you need to do is be obedient. Jonah was obedient, and Nineveh was changed because of it. I pray that we are obedient to God’s call, and our community is changed because of our obedience.
