Talk about not having a care in the world. A storm is raging on the sea, and Jonah is sound asleep. It’s hard to fathom a person sleeping through this great storm. You have sailors who spend their lives on the sea scared, but the land-faring Jonah is completely unbothered. If I had to play counselor to Jonah, I’d suggest he’s unresponsive because he has given up caring. It’s not that he is carefree and fancy-free; instead, he’s just done. He’s running away from God and wants nothing to do with life. So, when the storm comes, his body and mind stay asleep because he doesn’t care what might happen to him.

I don’t want you to be a person who gives up when the storm rages. Whether the storm is of your own making or it is completely out of your control, wake up and cry out to God. Confess your sin to God and ask God for another chance. Don’t be like Jonah, staying asleep. Wake up and call on God.

God has control over the storms of life. In the gospels, we can read a very similar story to this storm in Jonah 1. The disciples find themselves fighting against the storm, and Jesus is sound asleep without a care in the world. This time, it is not that Jesus is fed up with life; instead, Jesus knows that the storm is not a threat. When the disciples wake Jesus up, Jesus can calm the storm. Don’t be scared and don’t be unresponsive when storms come. Call upon God to calm the storms in your life.
