Even in disobedience, Jonah is an effective prophet. His witness to God leads the sailors to fear the Lord. I find it quite compelling that even though Jonah left for Tarshish to run away from his responsibilities as a prophet, God was still able to use that disobedience to lead others to the knowledge of the Lord.
Even in our disobedience, God can still work and bring glory to His name. This does not give us license to run away from God, but this fact gives us hope. We can have hope that even when we mess up, God can use our mistakes for God’s good. We can have hope that the furthering of God’s Kingdom does not rest on our success or failure. Even when we run away from God, God is still at work and can have success. The question left for us is this: will we work with God? Or will we work against God and not be part of His success? In this first chance for Jonah, God had success, and Jonah didn’t get to enjoy it. Do not let that be you.
