Jonah’s story is one wild ride. We are getting on that ride today. Sit down, buckle up, and get ready to journey with the whiniest, most disobedient, and yet somehow, most successful prophet in the Old Testament.
Today, we see Jonah’s decision to disobey God. These first three verses set up everything else in the story. God tells Jonah to go, and Jonah goes… the opposite direction. Twice in these three verses, we are told that Jonah’s desire was to run away from the presence of the Lord. Tomorrow, we are going to learn that there is no such place as “away from the presence of the Lord.”
When you need help and are struggling through difficult times, it is such a relief that God is always near you. However, when you want God to leave you alone, like Jonah did, you cannot escape what God has called you to do. You can try to run, but wherever you run to, God is there too.
What task has God given to you that you are running from? God’s gonna run after you and pursue you because he loves you. In the moment, you may feel that’s annoying, but at the end of the day, God wants you to be part of the work that He is doing on earth. Don’t miss out on what God is doing! When God calls, pick up the phone and listen. And then go… toward God’s will.
