What do Peter’s denials of Jesus have to do with Jonah? What Peter does with words, Jonah does in action. Peter says three times that he does not know Jesus; Jonah ignores the voice of God and runs the other way. Both men deny their relationship with God. And both men, later on, are reinstated to their calling.

We may not be so bold as Peter to audibly deny our relationship with Christ, but we regularly act like Jonah. We deny our relationship with God by ignoring God’s call on our lives. Every one of us has a calling from God. I’m not talking about being set apart to do vocational ministry. I’m just talking about our daily work of being a disciple.

We call Jonah a prophet because his story is in that section of the Bible. But there’s no calling story in Jonah’s story. We know very little about Jonah. All we know is he was called by God to go to Nineveh. His regular job for the rest of his life could have been something completely different. We don’t know.

As we close this week and think about Jonah’s running as well as Peter’s denials, what can you do to guard your heart against making their mistakes? What can you do to prepare yourself to go as God leads you and to be able to say, “Yes, I know Jesus.”?
