Has there been anything that churches have fought over more than styles of worship? Music styles, formal liturgy, sermon length, frequency of the Lord’s Supper, etc., have all been fought over for 2000 years in the church. Fighting over these issues is what happens when we let preference and performance overshadow our object of worship: God.
I firmly believe that God loves all types of worship, and that means we should be able to worship in many different styles. These wonderful verses in Colossians 3:12-17 seem to suggest that the early church had different types of music in their worship. Verse 16 mentions psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs as songs to sing to encourage, admonish, and be thankful. And that whatever you do (or sing), you should do everything in the name of Jesus.
Worship is about devoting ourselves to Jesus. It is not about music or the order of worship. Choices in worship are a vehicle that gets us from where we were (self-centered) to where we need to be (with God). And each of us needs to be able to get into whatever vehicle is in front of us and go to God. After all, isn’t getting to the destination more important than the color or size of the car?
